An ambitious Tom Marsh, looking to expand his gold rush freight business, finds himself falsely accused of murdering a young girl and is tossed into the Sonoma, California hoosegow along with a Mexican hombre who is himself accused of a murder he did not commit, but who could well be the most infamous bandito in California, Joaquin Murrieta. Together the two break out of jail and now Tom must stick close to Joaquin and his gang while he fights to prove his innocence.

I really enjoyed this book though as a stand alone I thought his characters could have been a little better developed. I don't remember what color Ina's eyes were as one example of my remark, or how tall she was, or how tall anyone was except for a comment about Jones being half a hand taller than Marsh. But the story was well developed, the characters fit into their parts well, the weapons were appropriate for the times, and the lure of gold and the influence it has on those who seek it, one way or another, was clear. I won't describe the goings on other than to say the story began in action and finished in action. I love westerns and I write them myself so I was a total sucker for the book. I enjoyed it a great deal, read it in one day because it held my attention so well. Good read.Product details

Joaquin starts with a bang and keeps on delivering chapter after chapter. John Putnam is a master storyteller who doesn’t disappoint. His action packed Tom Marsh series continues with a fast-paced-rough-and-tumble plot with a dose of romance and history thrown in for good measure. Another one I couldn’t stop reading. I highly recommend it!
John Rose Putnam has a great character in young Tom Marsh. Hard working and industrious , with an eye toward his future, you cannot help pulling for him in all his trials. Somehow, he manages to keep his head above water. Well written and interesting, but just too short a story.
This is a great Tom Marsh continuation. It is definitely a western story, but if that is your favorite genre, you'll enjoy it a lot. The author has put a lot of time in researching the gold rush era. I'm enjoying the series and have started the next book in the series. That should tell you something!
I loved this book, read it straight through in one sitting. The story is so good I didn't want to put it down. I'm a woman, I don't know how many women read westerns but a western like this with a good story to it, a good gunfight, good horses and some clean romance with hero's thrown in, I couldn't ask for better. Very descriptive of time period and great editing, no horse's rains instead of reins . Very entertaining and we'll written.
Very exciting story! Tom gets himself in lots of trouble and fights with some great help to get out of it! He must be handsome because he attracts the ladies and they seem to like him a lot.He has problems with the law ans makes a friend.I would love to have these serape people at my back as I am sure Tom is happy with them.They sound like my Mexican friends! These books are so well written that you fly through the pages. The stories are engaging and fast paced. Tom Marsh finds himself in trouble again as he serves as the advance man to open new business for the Hangtown Freight Company. A crooked sheriff and a murderous claim jumper try and frame him for murder. I highly recommend this series for fans of the western genre.
Back in the California gold rush days, young Tom Marsh has a freight business and wishes to expand it. He's left Hangtown and arrives in Sonoma on business. But soon he is arrested for killing a woman and is tossed into jail. His jail mate is Joaquin Murrieta, the most infamous bandit in California. They both break out of jail and Tom needs to stick with Joaquin and his gang of thieves until he can prove his innocence. This is a fast-moving, interesting story to enjoy. I was swept quickly into the story and it felt like I was watching the movie. Let's keep the old west stories alive! Highly recommend.
